Frequently asked questions about FriesNav.

Does FriesNav work without internet?

Yes. After a one-time download of a chart pack, the whole chart works fully offline — handy on the water, where coverage is often poor or absent. You only need internet to download or update the chart.

How do I download the offline chart?

Open Settings (the gear icon, top right) and choose “Download for offline use” for the chart you want. After that you can use the app without internet.

Which area does the chart cover?

The Frisian sailing waters: the Frisian lakes, the Wadden Sea off Fryslân and the IJsselmeer coast. The Markermeer is outside the current coverage.

Where do the depths and operating times come from?

Depth surveys come from the Province of Fryslân, buoyage and waterway information from Rijkswaterstaat (IENC), and bridge operating times from sources including waterkaart.net. Full attribution is available in the app under Settings → “Bronnen & licenties” (Sources & licences).

My position doesn't appear on the chart. What now?

Check that you have granted FriesNav location access (iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → FriesNav → “While Using the App”). FriesNav uses no background location, so your position only appears while the app is open.

Does FriesNav cost money or have a subscription?

No. FriesNav is free, with no in-app purchases, no subscription and no ads.

Can I use FriesNav as my only means of navigation?

No. FriesNav is an aid for recreational boating. Always consult official nautical charts, current notices to mariners and your own visual observation. You remain responsible for safe navigation.

Something on the chart looks wrong?

Please let us know — missing buoys, incorrect operating times or other issues all help us improve. Send an email and include the location.
